Is the E34 the factory designation for the '92 525i?

- Yes, the E34 includes the 525/530/535/540 US models and other various Euro/world models.

I would like to buy the chain-driven 5-series sedan. I was told that the M50 engine came out in '92 and is one of the best BMW ever made. True?

-The M50 engine came out in late '91. It has a timing chain rather than a belt as on the M20 engine in earlier 525s. The M50 also has hydraulic valve lifters rather than solid, so there is no valve adjustment to spend extra time on. The M50 TU (Technical Upgrade) was introduced in the '93 525 models and has a variable cam timing feature called VANOS. I'm sure you'll get an arguement from a lot of people about their various favorite BMW engines. Almost all of them are great, some have their problems. The M50 is not a problem engine.
