If your instrument cluster suddenly goes dark on the MID (Multi-Information Display), it is probably the circuit board. It is a notorious problem on some E34's. The board costs $900 plus labor to replace.

This input is based on my own experience.

I have to replace the shift selector lightbulb on my 95 540i and was wondering how many of you have tried to pull the guages without removing the steering wheel? I see that some have tried but is it worth the pain vs. the pain of removing the steering wheel, airbag, etc.

Last, would you replace all of the lightbulbs while its out to avoid having to do it again or is that overkill?
