Maybe 5 or 10 years from now, when my 535i is impractical as a daily driver I'll pick up a 2001 530i. With a manual transmission performance is quite good.

The e39 540 with a six-speed is just to expensive. Out the door is higher, insurance is higher and $3.00/gal gas is on the way. The V8's cost more to maintain too.

If I really wanted / need the 540's power maybe I'd go for the 330 instead. I'd have to drive one first though...

The new 3 litre 6 looks like it may be a great motor. Comprable power to the M30 and real cyclinder liners instead of a coating. Time will tell, but this could be another 300,000 mile motor.

By the time I'm ready to buy my next BMW, we will know just how good the Alusil V8's really are.

I am a happy 535ia owner but i know the time will come when its time to step up. i had a 83 528e and i remember thinking it was "the bomb" until about 93 or so. Any thoughts on the next step?? I dont know much about the newer Bmw's, just that they dont look as good. Im thinking of a 97 540i any thoughts.
