Which year is your 540? it should have a rev-limiter my 95'525i(obviously slower than your 540) has it, on a DE I managed to get the rev-limiter to kick in and the car coughs up a bit. Shifting up should be no harm other than stress, if you shift down then there could be damage since the rev-limiter wouldn't stop the wheels from turning.
