Of EMLs and Air Boxes on my $3099 535i (archive)

Hi, My new (hardly, but hey, it runs good) 90 535i arrived yesterday, and on top of cosmetic catastrophy, i found the EML light on all the time. I also noticed this has been mentioned as dealing with the electronic throttle and the ASC. I noticed the switch for my ASC is missing (yes it does have asc, the box is there, and cut out for the switch, but no switch). I checked for fault codes, but none prevailed, so could the missing switch be a broken connection that sets off the eml?

Also problematic is an erratic idle when the Air Box is present, but when i remove it, the engine idles normally. The filter doesnt appear to be excessively dirty. Thanks in advance for opinions or actual knowledge,
