There are several models in the 5 series line (520, 525, 528, 530, 533, 535, 540 to name a few) so the dealer is technically correct when they point out that your 5 series is a 540. You could just as easily point out that a 540 is a 5 series so your statement is technically correct too. But unless you want to engage in the old SNL Point-Counterpoint game (Jane, you ignorant slut...) it's probably best to just smile and say "asshole" under your breath.
The HP and torque in a 540 set it apart from the other models in the 5 series line from an "able to glue your head to the headrest" perspective. The grin factor linked to the 540's accelerator is pretty high. Obviously IMHO.

We have a '01 Mercedes E430 Sport, a '95 540 and a '01 540i - and both BMWs are equipped with the 6-speed gearbox. A car to me is just a car, as I grew up with BMWs, Porsches and Mercedes (my dad is a crazed fanatic spending all our money on these expensive machines) - but whenever I take these two BMWs to our local dealer of 12 years and about 8 BMWs, the service guys always seem to make this statement...
You don't drive a 5-series... you drive a 540.
What's the big deal???
I am just a 17-year old kid - help me understand...
