E38 16x8 wheels (23mm offset) may rub against your front strut towers. I had them with 225/55/16 Dunlop SP5000's on my 530iT, and they did not rub. When I installed them on my lowered '90 535i, they rubbed the front strut towers VERY slightly -- only enough to clean the dirt, but not the paint off the strut tower, and not enough to remove any lettering from the tire.

Other people have had some rubbing with these wheels (Hi Micah, Hi Dave). A small spacer (3-5mm) will fix the rub.

YMMV,
Drew Zacharda

Any E23, E24, E28, E31, E32 and E38 will fit your E34 without any modification.

Enjoy.
