I should also add that after I tried to bleed the cold system I let the car idle for about 20-30 min during which time I loosened the bleed screw as directed in Bentley. Air sputtered out slowly for the longest time and I finally just removed the bleed screw completely and waited some more. Coolant never really poured out of the bleeder hole without air. By my judgement the system never fully bled out even though the expansion tank level was about half way above the cold mark to the top. Anyhow, about every few seconds a bit of coolant would eject from the bleeder hole. After a few minutes of this I replaced the bleeder screw and the car seemed to run at right temperature during a short 50mi drive today.

Given these circumstances I don't think the hole is plugged.

Do you think I need to completely fill the expansion tank in order to bleed the system?

I will try to fill with both the cap and the bleed screw off in the morning (plus burping the hoses) and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your advice.

The vent hole could be clogged. Take the screw completely out & poke a wire down it & let it gravity feed with the engine off & the coolant cap off. Also, squeeze the hoses to burp any air left in it.

I replaced the heater control valve on my 95 525i yesterday. I didn't drain the cooling system for the job so afterward I decided to add coolant the then bleed the system to make up for the small amount that was lost during replacement. I followed the instructions in Bentley, but was confused.

Bentley says to fill to cold mark, loosen bleed screw then fill till coolant exits blead screw. Well I filled and filled almost to the top without any coolant exiting bleed screw.

Do I need to completely fill reservoir, to blead out all the air, then run engine and bleed again? Do I then need to drain the coolant back to the cold mark after the engine cools?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
