Check your radiator cap. My 535i did the same thing and it got to the point where I would stay off the freeway during rush hour to avoid the long hot idling periods. If your radiator cap's spring is deteriorating, it may not be able to raise the radiator's pressure high enough to keep the coolant from boiling over. Many people overlook this somewhat simple cure for an overheated engine. Caps do fail.
