Check trans fluid..... If it's brownish and smells burnt that's a bad sign......
Also, I' Ching should be consulted ...after checking t-fluid...

how can you tell if the torque converter is going bad??? What are the tell-tale signs?? I have a 1989 535iA with 4 speed ZF transmission (i presume).
