when the center is dim, that center bulb is probably out, and you are just getting light from the other two bulbs on the back. there are 3 bulbs that provide the backlighting on the instrument cluster. My left bulb is intermittent (the one kinda behind the gas gague). The funny thing is that it is on a metal rail for power. the same rail that the other two bulbs are connected to. It might just be the ground that tehy share though. the power might come from the other side of the circuit board.Ther is a chance that the board itself is bad on the early E34's. I am going to try another bulb some day, whenever I get around to getting one.

Anyone run into this. I have an 89 535 and the instrument panel readout (the one directly in the center) just stays dim. Once on a blue moon it will brighten up but usually is barely readable. Is there a bulb back there for just that one readout or an adjustment for brighness somewhere or something else? Anyone run into this before?
