On the older 535i (not sure about the other model) there is a problem with the oil filter canister. The new model solved the problem.

Changing the oil canister MIGHT save your problem.

'89 535i with the same problem.

My wife's '91 735i has the same problem, mabe will try the oil filter canister trick to see if it solves it.
