just bought a '92 525it (97k) and ran across the ticking issue, occasionally.

my (bmw only) mechanic hears this and says "i bet if you look thru the records you'll find they've been using synthetic oil". i knew he was right because the owner told me so - all records showed mobil one.

his suggestion was to replace it with valvoline synthetic blend 20w-50, providing more viscosity. no ticks since, although i must add that i did use the oppty. to also add slick 50 (i know, but that's a different thread), and inflate the tires to 44/40psi.

as he promised, it's now a different (and even better) car.
