If the fan only works on high (full blast) this is pretty east to fix. Check the archives, but I ahve included info from some of my earlier posts on this:

my 94 530i did exactly the same thing. There is a bi-metallic strip that acts as overheat protection in the resistor box that is the cause of the intermittent operation. It only affect speeds 1-3, and when you run in 4 it cools down and allows 1-3 to work for a while. I can explain the theory of this if you want, but the simple answer is to go get the resistor module for about $17 and replace it. The BMW part # for my car was 64-11-1-468-524. I had posted directions on how to do it for the 94 on 9/3/99, so they should be in the archives for this board. Let me know if you need more help. This is relatively easy and cheap to fix if you have a couple of hours to spend on your hands and knees.

From my 9/3/99 post:
. Get down low so you can see the top of the gas pedal. There is a small carpeted panel that goes along side the trans hump (I guess it is about three inches high and 8-10 inches long). There is one Phillips screw in this panel. Remove it. The relay in question is up against the firewall directly to the right of the gas pedal. You will be looking at the back side of it (where the wires connect, so all you will see is a wiring harness and plug. Tug on this and the relay should come right out, then install the new one. One hassle is getting the panel back on. I recommend using a long, thin screwdriver to align the panel, then take out the screwdriver and insert the screw. Feel good that saved some bucks!

Any suggestions on how to find the right module? and how do I tell if its bad. The fan works when the car goes over a bump or when I first start it up. It is getting too hot here in Texas to have this car like it is.
