on a volvo not a bmw. I just posted it for anybody who hadn't seen the core of a cat. I'm pretty sure however that the cat is common on the 535s and 525s. That both pipes empty into one chamber acting effectively as a crossover pipe on a v8. However it doesn't look like the bmw v8 has a crossover pipe. It looks like a 4-2-1 setup on the v8 so maybe the pulses are already setup to help scavenge each other.

I was talking exhaust with my muscle-car buddy (drives a '70 Monte Carlo with suspension & power mods), and he was telling me that a lot of muscle cars install "x-pipes" to balance out cylinder pressures, making the engine more efficient and even getting a little more power out of it. Would this be worth installing, or are either the cats or resonator "communal" (ie, shared airflow from both pipes) and balance out any pressure differences from unequal-length exhaust manifolds? Bill, I know you opened up that cat for a customer, what do you think? Just curious, he said this would also quiet exhaust noise down, which wouldn't be too bad, it's plenty loud. :)
