I'm going to try and fix my sticking ignition switch. The problem is only when turning the key, inserting and removing is not an aissue. From what I have found from the archive there's an interaction between the ignition switch and the tumbler that might cause the problem. 1st question: What is a tumbler, what does it do? 2nd question: Can I get access to the ignition switch and tumbler just by removing the lower steering column cover, or do I have to remove the steering wheel as well?

Thanks,
Kåre L

The ignition lock is a weak link on these cars. My 95 525i is giving me problems. I had problems getting the key to turn. I attempted to remove the tumbler using the procedure in the Bentley Manual on Page 612-2. It did not work. I then disconnected the battery, removed the lower cover on the column, the airbag and the steering wheel. With the wheel removed, I could see it all more clearly. I removed the ignition switch (orange switch on the left hand side of the column) by loosening the two set screws that secure it from underneath. I tested the ignition lock and it was still difficult to turn. I continued trying to remove the tumbler but did not succeed. I finally got the key to work smoothly by pressing the tumbler (key hole) in before I inserted the key. This seemed to engage the steering wheel lock, and caused an audible "Click" when I pressed it. I still have problems with the tumbler but am able to get around it by first pressing the keyhole in and then inserting the key.

This may not help you but it shows that there are some problems with the ignition lock. Next time I have my car at the dealer, I will have them remove the ignition lock using their special tool/technique so that I can inspect it.

I hope this helps you some.

Scott
