Capacitors or fuel sender? (archive)

For the last couple of days my fuel gauge has been very low (so low that the light comes on) even after we put 10 gallons of fuel in the tank. But i finaly ran out of fuel today, not knowing where the level was. The OBC range was 15 miles. After filling up the tank with a little fuel from a gas can i drove the car to a gas station and toped the tank. After that the OBC range was 345 miles, and the fuel gauge was beonde F. So what could the problem be? A capacitor or the fuel sender?
