I have a 1991 535i that I bought three years ago because of the total performance package that it represented. Great engine, great brakes, great handling, and great looks to boot. Since buying it, I've lowered it, put on Bilstein touring struts, R & D sway bars, 17" bolted cross spokes, Michelin XGTZ4's, and a Dinan chip. Plus, I've upgraded most of the stereo system. I love my car and occasionally, I love to run it hard on the two lanes here in Kentucky. But I don't do it when I put others in jeopardy.

If I want to put myself in danger by running faster than I should, then that's a decision I make for myself and I alone should bear the consequences. However, it is TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE to subject others to those consequences because I've decided to race some other idiot through interstate traffic or such. We've all read the tragic stories of someone going to the store to get a loaf of bread or some other mundane thing and getting killed because some idiot was driving irresponsibly. I can guarantee you that if anyone killed a family member of mine while racing someone, they had better hope they end up in prison, because they won't want to face me.

So how about everyone controlling their urge to drop the hammer everytime someone looks their way looking like they want to race. You know, it is an option to not race them. It may save you a ticket and even save your own life. It also reduces your chances of having to look the members of another family in the eyes and tell them that you're sorry for killing someone they loved. And I don't know about you, but I don't want to have to look myself in the mirror each morning knowing I took the life of an innocent bystander because I wanted to get a couple of cheap thrills. I think that's more than I could bear.

Drive safe and be responsible,

Robert J. Kieffer
