On my '89 353i I had a problem where the ignition switch would completely lock up. On one occasion, I spent nearly 45 minutes playing with the key before it finally released. I had to replace the entire switch housing on the steering column. The parts were about $85 dollars, but the job took quite a bit of time. There are a lot of pieces that have to come loose. Upon inspecting the housing after I removed it, I noticed that the detent plunger and spring assembly had come apart and a loose piece was lodging between the tumbler mechanism and the housing.

I'm going to try and fix my sticking ignition switch. The problem is only when turning the key, inserting and removing is not an aissue. From what I have found from the archive there's an interaction between the ignition switch and the tumbler that might cause the problem. 1st question: What is a tumbler, what does it do? 2nd question: Can I get access to the ignition switch and tumbler just by removing the lower steering column cover, or do I have to remove the steering wheel as well?

Thanks,
Kåre L
