We are considering purchase of a manual transmission 530 or 540. We have read mixed reviews regarding the reliability of the E34 V8's as compared to the E39 V8's and the 6 cylinder cars (E34 /E39). What is your experience? Also, how costly is maintence and how is fuel economy? Would appreciate any info. Thanks.

: Go to www.530i.org ! There you will find good info on this, it will also cover and pertain to both the 530i & 540i. Also one thing to consider, is there is some problem that I have heard about the automatic transmission valve bodies in the mail list I receive from that site. Since I have a 5-speed manual transmission, I did not pay particular attention to their problems. Fuel mileage is great. I get 22-25 miles per gallon and I don't drive it like an old lady. If I had it to do over again, I would buy a 535i.
