These are very expensive cars to own and maintain. I bought mine in Dec 1999 with 54 miles. It now has 87k miles. The original Nikasil block was replaced at 30k miles with another Nikasil block which still runs great. Aside from normal wear and tear items like brakes, these M60 engined cars have some known issues:

- water pumps that go at 60-75K miles
- radiators that go at 70-80K miles
- thrust arm bushings that wear out at 60-75K miles
- leaky (and expensive) power steering hoses
- flaky automatic transmissions
- leaking valve cover gaskets

I've had all of the above done except for the transmission problems. Currently my exhaust leaks, I'm losing coolant (suspect head gasket) and my shocks are gone!

Look for one that has an Alusil block and good service records. Have it checked out by a competent independent mechanic. I love my car but if I was doing it all over again I might look for an E34 535i (although they're getting long in the tooth and hard to find) or I might spend a little more and look for an E39 528i 5 Speed with Sport Package.

We are considering purchase of a manual transmission 530 or 540. We have read mixed reviews regarding the reliability of the E34 V8's as compared to the E39 V8's and the 6 cylinder cars (E34 /E39). What is your experience? Also, how costly is maintence and how is fuel economy? Would appreciate any info. Thanks.
