When was your water pump changed? Your car came with a pump that had a plastic impeller known to break down. It could be slipping, ready to break completely, and not moving water efficiently enough to cool the engine..... They typically go in the 60-80K mile range. While the other suggestions are also good possibilities, this is a known problem on the M50 motors.

I have a '93 525ia. The needle on the temperature gauge goes up to about 3/4 when I'm idling in traffic. The temp. goes down a bit when I'm driving. Could that be a problem w/ the fan clutch or the thermostat? Coolant level is fine. Please help! Thanks
