Replacing door stop (archive)

I've just bought a 1992 525i with 138k miles. The car's in great condition but needs a few things sorted out.

One of the things I need to fix is the drivers door stop. The existing door stop must have seized a while back and the loads have caused a tear in the sheet metal where the door stop is mounted.

I plan to remove the old door stop, weld up and reinforce the tear in the sheet metal and install a new door stop.

I started to look at this last weekend and couldn't get any further than removing the door trim. ALthough the door trim just pops off it is held in position by the door handle assembly and I can't see any obvious way to remove this.

Can anyone help? Is there anything else I need to be aware of to complete this repair?

TIA,

Doug
