Very easy. First, warm up the engine. Then remove the oil filler cap from the valve cover, followed by removing the oil drain plug on the oil sump (access laying down in front of car). Let the oil drain out. While the oil is draining, replace the filter. The filter is in in the canister next to the top radiator hose. You unscrew the top from this canister and take out the paper filter element, then replace it with a new one. Then screw the top back on the canister, but not too tight (I think only about 18 to 20 ft-lbs, about like a spark plug). The filter kit (from the dealer) includes a filter element, a new rubber O-ring for the canister top, and a new copper crush gasket for the oil drain plug. Also, don't overtighten the drain plug or you might strip it. After draining all the oil and replacing the filter and drain plug, fill the crankcase with 8 quarts of oil (Mobil 1, preferably). Start and check for leaks. Takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Hi all,
I jus bought a used bmw 530i - 1994. I would like to change engine oil by myself. But I don't know where the oil filter is located. Besides that, I would like to know procedures how to do oil change for it. What tools do I need to make oil changed. Is there anyone know how to do it? Please give me some instructions.
Thank you very much.

Tony
