Thanks to Patrick at BMA for the $12 shock and Joe Ording for conversion information. This information is to convert a two-strap glove box into a one-strap one-shock glove box found in later model e34's. There are two ways to do this, a hack way and a factory way.
The hack way involves simply buying a shock and installing it to where the strap was. The problem is that the upper mounting point is not made for a shock and will require a fabricated pin to hold it up there. The original plastic pin that holds the strap cannot hold up the shock. Later models that include the shock have some sort of brass pin inserted. This part cannot be bought from the dealer or taken off a wrecked car.
The factory installation will require the purchase of a carrier bracket from a wrecked car. This is the bracket to which the glove box is attached to. I was able to purchase this bracket, including the shock, for $25 at a junk yard. $25 is what the dealership charges for the shock alone. Make sure you get the correct bracket (It will have the shock attached) Installation will require removal of the glove box and cover above the glove box. Three bolts and four screws will need to be removed to free the bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal. I will probably send Bruno pics of the parts and installation. Glove box now doesnt thud down everytime I open it.
