This is something I was planning on looking into. The M30 block has the same mounting face for both E28 and E34 (looks like it from the ETK although that's hardly the definitive way of figuring).
The concern is that the E28 unit hung downward so will it interfere with something like suspension or steering parts that are not common to the E28? The only way to know is to look at the two cars side by side (I don't know anyone with an E28 535 but do know plenty of 528e owners, which doesn't help). If you have the opportunity, please take a look for us.
The E28 design, with the upside down canister, does not need a check valve at all. To make changing the filter a cleaner process, there seems to be a hollow bolt at the tip of the can so you can drain it all out before pulling off the canister. Not as neat as our E34s but what the heck, at least it can't fail.
Yes, there is a drain bolt on the upside-down E28 filter canister. The E28 535i uses the same filter as the E34 535i. When I did my first oil change on my M535i, I misaligned the canister. After wondering for a few seconds why the oil light wouldn't go out, I saw LOTS of fresh Mobil 1 under the car. (at least it wasn't beer that I wasted :) I'd offer to take measurements of my M535i's filter canister, but I will be about 5 months until I have to change the oil again.
