d are. 1. Hydraulic tappets some exhibit a noise problem and the only correction is to replace the hydraulic tappets. 2. A loud irregular tapping sound coming from the bottom of the block on cylinder bank 5-8. This is caused by incorrectly sized rod and main bearings. The correct bearings are available through bmw as a replacement. 3. Oil leaks at the filter housing. There is a redesigned oil filter oring to get rid of this. 4. Coolant leaks at the valley cover gasket which drip down the back of the block out of the hole between the trans and engine and look like rear freeze plug leaks but aren't. 5. Upper timing case oil leaks which can affect vehicles produced from 7/94 to 12/95. If leaking these must be replaced with a redesigned gasket. 6. Lower pan gasket leaks. A new gasket has been put into service in mid 96 for leaking lower pan gaskets.7. A porous oil level sensor was used in some m60s from 1/95 to 1/96. It would give false readings, There is a service action on this.
BMW does not use sleeved engine blocks.
From 1993-95, their aluminum blocks
reacted badly to USA gas with high
sulfer contamination. This caused pitting
in the cylinder walls, with an eventual
loss of compression. BMW extended the
engine warranty for this one and specific problem
to 100kmiles and 6 years (from in-service date).
Other than this, I believe the 1995 540i
has no engine related weaknesses (I've not
experienced any in 90k miles).
