(options being 535iM swap, M3 swap or 530i stick install) the stick installation in your existing car should be by far the cheapest. It would also let you move in stages, i.e. find a 540 6 speed tranny, swap that in, wait for bank account to recover, find a wrecked 97+ 540 and swap in the 4.4 liter motor (of course, then you get into the OBDI/OBDII issues again....).

The trannies are out there, but in parts and labor for the tranny swap _alone_ you are looking at about $3K. I've only been looking at motor swaps and superchargers lately, Drew's got more complete numbers on the tranny swap...... Where is he???? Hello? Drew? Comments, please???
