If it were me (and someday it may very well be me), I'd convert the 530iT to manual. It will probably cost about $6500 or so (labor included, with all new parts except trans) to convert to a 6-speed. Converting to a 5-speed from a 530i sedan would probably be at least $1k cheaper (more if you get used parts).

I've heard from a couple of trustworthy sources that the 6-speed from the M62-engined E39 will bolt up to the E34's M60, but don't hold me to that. If that's really true, it will be MUCH easier to find a used 6-speed trans. (Just TRY to find a used 6-speed from a '95 540i!)

With a chip in the 3.0 V8, you should be at 238hp -- not far from the stock hp in an E36 M3. If you want to convert to a 4.0l engine at the same time, add about 6 hours of labor, plus the cost of the engine.
