As Adnan said..its a bear to remove the oil pan..I tried initially to get the pan of my M-30 off by raising the engine..couldn't get the motor up high
enough on my E-32/735il. Bill R has done it this
way on I believe other Bimmer's. You need about
a three inch lift. Mine hit at about 2.5 inches.
I believe the best way is to drop the crossmember.
You still need a cherry picker to restrain the
engine while you drop the crossmember. As far as
checking the pump...the internal clearances of my
pump at 145K still looked good. I replaced it
because I wasn't going back in there any time soon. If you really want to tackle this job,
send me an E-mail with any questions that you may
have...remember the journey well.

James,

Pulling the pan on an M30 is a bear. Ask George Mann as he recently did it and can probably give you very detailed instructions.

Basically, you have to either raise the engine or drop the suspension cross member a couple of inches. Remove the pan and rotate the crank as you go to extract the pan. Not exactly a fun job. But hey, now's your opportunity to replace that leaky sump gasket :-)

It sure sounds to me like you have an oil pump problem, not a canister one.

Regards,
Adnan
