The 92 “535iTM” seems dead. Or at least innacoma. Thats too bad cause there was such an old school appeal to that setup.
As for a 5XXiT/M3 hybrid, while the idea of a screamin small six has some draw, the vagon will still need to pull schleppin duty on occasion and torque will be appreciated. Plus it seems not to be a cost effective solution. Although we do have precedence.
Now if we stick to the v8; according to Tiger, some middle Nickasil replacements used a M62 block. M60/M62 compatibility post. For this to be rea$onable for BMWNA to do, it would have to bolt up to the M60 trannys, right? Ergo M62 trannys should bolt up to M60 blocks. That would simplify and introduce some economy into the search for a suitable tranny. AND allow for a staged conversion to 4.4L/6spM.
OK what bout the importing a euro, 540iTM or M5T. I know the Ms are rare, whatta bout 40s?
Of course this is pie in sky @ moment, but these things take planning. Currently as soon as i complete my DIY inspection II, she will be sharked. Maybe i’ll be able to tolerate her sluggishness w/ A/C on then. I mean honestly (as Bentley used to describe its engines) her power is “adaquate”, given spurs with no A/C. But hit the switch & YUK, no power.

I too am looking at engine swap possibilities. I was thinking about the M3 motor and the stock transmission (will the auto tranny hold up?). Or just stroking the 2.5 with a 3.0 crank and building the motor. Food for thought.

Any other ideas? Looks like im in the same boat with everyone else.
