If the transmission mounts have never been replaced, they may be old and deformed enough to allow the back end of the transmission to move down and cause the driveshaft to contact the exhaust heat shield. This sounds very similar to what happened to me and it's a very inexpensive fix in comparison to a new or rebuilt drive shaft.

I have a 92 535i auto trans with 215k miles. Over the past few months I noticed a clicking sound that seemed to be coming from under the car. It occured after coming off the highway and into the city, or after stopping for gas. At higher speeds the sound would eventually dissappear after a few minutes. Even in the mornings this sound would not appear. Trouble shooting was hard until this week when my mechanic diagnosed that it was the drive shaft and would need a complete replacement. My question is 1) Do i need a replacement or can this be fixed. ( the cost $500 + is a lot for me ) Any help or insight will be appreiciated.
