I've got an '81 635 Euro with the cannister that hangs down. True, there's no risk of oil draining (up) out of the cannister due to a bad check valve, but these oil filters are a pain in the ass to change. You generally end up spilling at least some oil removing the filter, and reinstalling is much more difficult than on those where the cannister is right there in your face.

Not sure which I prefer, although I haven't had to deal with the check valve problem (yet)....
