Thats what my u-joint syptoms sounded like. Raise the car up in the front on ramps, or such, and raise one back wheel up (make sure it is well chocked!) go under the car, have someone turn the wheel that is raised (make sure it is not in park) If the u-joint has excessive play in it (specs are in bently manual), you need a whole new driveshaft, since bmw u-joints are impossible to replace. It is a fairly expensive fix, $300 for the driveshaft, and some other hardware like self-locking nuts, but if you do it yourself, labor costs at least will be axed. Labor could run easily into the $300-$400 range on something like this, it takes a lot of time, but is a fairly straight-forward operation. E-mail me if it is your driveshaft, and if you want more details on fixing it, since i just did this on my 535i. Hope this helps,
