I do own a 2000 silver M5 and I am a accomplished driver having raced cars since I was 15 years old so I will be happy to comment on Nicks driving.
My wife and I had just left Northbrook Court on our way home after seeing Jurasic Park III(damn that was a short movie) and came to the Lake Cook overpass where we got behind a dark gray 535i six speed. The reason I noticed this is because the car was swaying back and forth while the driver did not have his foot on the brake. He was alone in the car and as soon as the light turned green he took off at what I believed was full speed. I decided that I would follow him since he seemed to be going at a good pace and would allow me to get home a little sooner. I was in fifth gear most of the time and was just playing follow the leader. I was only cruising and had no idea he felt there was a race. We started coming up to traffic and I was in one lane and he was in the other. I started to slow down only to see him do a shoulder pass in the right lane. That was not the worlds smartest move but not any more riskier than any other pass, just more illegal.
My wife said to me at that point that the other guy was driving like a as..... and to torture him a little so that he could see what real driving was like. I downshifted to third gear and was able to easily get on his tail. He is right when he wrote that I was on his tail and that I did flash my brights. This was done to tell him to move over so that I could fly past him. I would back off that throttle and then hit it again, making my car surge back and forth while he was at full throttle I only really used my gears and throttle that one time and the other times I was in fifth gear with partial throttle. He then turned off at the Elm Road exit and that was the last we saw of him. Isn't this a small world. I am glad I was able to give Nick something to write about, but I really never intended to race Nick nor did I know we were racing. I think Nick has a nice car but the M5 is a much faster car(mine is also not stock) and had Nick not pulled the shoulder manuver, I would have never stormed up on his tail. I am sorry to burst his bubble and for all the people that were blasting him for his driving, I do not feel that it was very dangerous. There was only the one instance where he pulled the questionable shoulder pass and I hope he wont be making any more of those. Drive safe everyone and enjoy your cars.
