Wow! 9K sounds like a show quality paint job. Tiger is right, it will take two months (there is a place in Atlanta that does show quality work and they quote 5 months last time I checked). The difference between a show quality paint job and one done by Macco(sp?) is the prep work. Good prep work is mostly all done by hand. Removing all the trim (not just masking it). Soda blasting to get the old paint off without harming the metal. Some places will remove dings/dents for the price, since a new paint job over dents/dings looks terrible. Then the car has to be primed, sanded and cleaned. It may get another coat of primer then sanded and cleaned again. You could then get several color coats with color sanding in between each. Also very time consuming to do all the nooks and cranies that don't ordinarily get seen. Drying is important (not to fast, not to much heat, etc). After the color coat(s) are applied, then the clear coat get applied.

It's a very labor intensive operation, plus the scheduling of booths and HVLP equipment. A good shop WILL have a wait list (2+ months actually sounds a bit quick!)

Maaco on the other hand will do minor prep and blast you car with paint. They can be done in 2-3 days. The difference in a great paint job is remarkable.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being best, stock BMW rate about a 6-7). I had a friend who had his Porsche (classic 365C) painted (lacquer). He asked the painter how he (the painter) knew he was done. Painter said he would kill a fly and drop it on the hood. When the dead fly slid off the hood on it own, he was done! That car looked great in black (under body was done in black IMRON - also looked great) And this was a driver!

When they quote you $9K and 2+ Months for repainting the 535i.... (and basically said they'd rather not do it in conversation)

So much for German Technologies..
Time to check for other paint/body shops in the Dallas Area...
