Is this true of the 540's as well? I have the same problem except that it is EXTREMELY intermittent. It hasn't happened for months and yesterday it happened again.

Thanks,
Nick

I have a 1990 530 auto (U.K.) with 80k on the clock. I have recently noticed a burning smell coming through the fresh air vent when waiting at lights. I have this evening noticed the smell becoming worse and on lifting the bonnet there appears to be smoke coming from the rear of the engine between the engine and the bulkhead. The smke seems to be eminating from the exhaust (possibly oil) trouble is I just cannot see where the oil (if thats what it is) is coming from as the plug heat shield and the close proximity of the engine to the bulkhead does not allow sight of the area. HELP

My bet would be that your oil pressure sender is leaking. They all do after a time. CHeap and easy to fix. Just replace it.

HTH
