Castrol Syntec is not a true synthetic oil - it is made from hydroisomerized crude oil because it is a cheaper base stock (1/2 the price). Mobil 1 is a true synthetic oil, built up from more-expensive shorter chain molecules (PAO's). I use Mobil 1 15-W50 and have been very pleased. That actually shocked me when I read about Castrol, since I had always thought of them as one of the premier oil companies. However, this made me question the integrity of their other products, which I have since stopped using.

I have a 92 525 with 50k, been using 20-50 Castrol scince new. I am thinking of changing to 5-50 Castrol synthetic. Anyone know a downside to this? An alternate would be 15-50 Mobil 1.
