Sway bar links that are shot will give clunking noise whenever you drive thru uneven roads. You may even hear the clunking if the steering is turned lock to lockThey work the same even when loose but body roll will be tremendous if the links are totally separated, which can be dangerous. They are cheap.Replace them.
I changed my thrust arm bushings at home using car jacks.Wheels must be off the car to get the thrust arm on a hydraulic press to press the bushing in. moots '90 520i
I was under the front end for brake rotors & pads, and noticed that the ball joints on both sway bar links are shot. They're not expensive ( Bav Auto wants about $55 for a pair ), but I was just wondering what effect this would have on the ride & steering? ( I don't corner agressively very often ).
On a related subject, I ~do~ need the replace a thrust rod. Am I right in thinking this is a tough job with the car on ramps or jack stands instead of a full lift?
