Mine 540 is doing the same thing. The left strut is gone. I stood and watched from the sidewalk while my son drove the front left wheel over a recessed manhole cover. The wheel vibrated violently for a few bounces.

In looking closer, the left strut is leaking, so I'm replacing both of them. Also, the left thrust bushing is loose, so I'm replacing both of them with 750 bushings.

Should have the parts by this weekend.

Marlin

marlin- i just replaced the control arm bearings with the 750's, i have 94 540 also did the idler arm and tie-rods, struts are next...are you planning on changing the bushings yourself??? if so your a better man than i...i could not break the ball joints and i tried everthing except a tourch(was tring to find one)i gave up and had a shop do it,$220.00 + they did the alignment and balanced the tires...a few days later was at bmw and say a tech doing them, he had a great clamp that threaded up the bolt,2 hits with the hammer and it was off...i almost broke down and cried...good luck...youcan buy the tool at bmw, pressing the bushings is a whole nother story....m
