It depends on your preparation of the car before you wax. If your car feel rough when brushing it with your bare hand... like a fine sandpaper or couple of sharp bumps here and there... you have to polish the car with fine-cut polish.

If your car feel smooth and just a bit of rough spike here and there, then I would use clay bar to clean your car of all contaminants... do this after your fine cut polishing if you have to do it.

Lastly, I use Meguiar Gold Class wax... paste is easier and more efficient... and that will last about 6 months in open garage/ covered condition... washing car every week with regular car wash... not water only... and don't wipe dust off the car without soap... this make the matter worse and wear out your wax much faster.
