In Reply to: Brake Light circuit - what is it and where is it? posted by mike on August 27, 2001 at 13:14:31:

how much is the part and how do you replace it ?

The car is a 95 540.

to search the archives! This is a common problem on E34's, and there is a ton of info in the archives on the problem, causes, fixes, etc.

Seriously, the issue is a faulty brake light switch, a pretty cheap part, that takes 10-20 minutes to replace. Part number is 61-31-8-360-417 ($6.50 at BMA Auto Parts). The switch will give a CHK BRK LT CIRCUIT warning on the OBC Check Control display.

Good luck. By the way, there may be a writeup of how-to in Bruno's website (address below).
