that sachs and boge were 2 separate companies and they merged in 1992 into 1. Also you should not use a impact on the spring compressor. Thats the primary cause of them failing and some guy getting himself hurt. I know its a pain to crank them up by hand but its not that hard and its a lot safer. Also if its your own tool it will last a lot longer. No manufacturer of spring compressor s will warranty them if they find out you used and impact.
but I know that mine were never swapped out, and Boge was the OE supplier, so I just assumed. You know what happens when you make an assumption? You make an ass out of u and mption! Who really knows what my old shocks were?

I had borrowed compressors from a friend who does a lot of work on various cars on his off days (he's a fireman). Having used some of his tools, I now wonder how he keeps all of his fingers, and I will never use them again. One compressor (I was using one pair as the main compressors and another pair as a safety-4 clamps on each spring, thought it would be okay) came free, ejected itself upwards, hit my nephew's shoulder leaving a NICE bruise, and then continued it's flight, landing about 20 feet away. That was on the last spring as we were decompressing. If it had been on the first, I would have quit right there.

I forgot to ask something in my original post - nowhere on the original struts have I seen the Boge logo. All Sachs and BMW. I know Boge is a Sachs company, but you do see Chevy badges on the GM Corvette, don't you ? :-)
So what is it - is Boge not the OEM or there was a special package on the car ? (Sachs sporting susp ?)

About the spring compressors - later ones have safety pins and you can do pretty much anything you want with them. I was scared senseless, 2 twists (not even 60 degrees) at a time on each side and the friendly neighbour of the friendly friend that hosted me simply put the impact gun and compressed the damned thing.

Gives me shudders to think of the situation - you - no, not you, your nephew was mighty lucky.

The feeling ? When you show up at 1am, darker than hell with grease between your molars (no, I'm kidding, but it sounds kewl) and you tell your wife winning $500 at the lottery wouldn't feel better - that look of admiration is simply priceless.


Nice job - glad you had good spring compressors, I almost lost a nephew (no, I'm not kidding, 6 inches to the right would have been his neck)

I found many of those little tidbits when I swapped my first set of strut inserts/springs. It is a good feeling when it's all done, though, isn't it - both the ride and the accomplishment.

The most important note is to EAT and DRINK WATER! I always seem to do what you describe - get up and start a job (with no breakfast), work thru to late afternoon, hmm, taking longer than I thought, better have a beer, hmm, ready to start cleanup, almost dinner time, better have another beer, whew, all done, looks good, why does my head HURT so much?!?
