Same exact symptoms I had on my 94 540i. Mine was a resistor block (located above your right toe on the accelerator behind panels). $16 and 15 minutes to install.

Some cars have a 'sword' instead of a resistor. Check the archives for which type you might have and for links to detailed procedures (including photos) for repair/replacement of either.

Think also about replacing the microfilter if it hasn't been done in a while. There is also plenty of discussion on that. Mine needed replacement (after replacement, speed 2 was more than old speed 4!) and I have a sneaking idea high drag filters may encourage resistor failure, since their seems to be a fair amount of unscientific correlation.

94 540i, with 4 fan speeds again.

'92 535i. Fan is becoming Intermittent on all but high, when it quits, I can run on high for a short while then it will work on slower speeds again. looking at the wiring diagram, there is a thermal limiter located within a resister box, could this be failing and is this resister box the one located in Fig. 4 pg 640-2 of Bentleys. This would also give me a -2 or -3 system which is my feeling. Looking at wire diagram for 89-90 it shows a final stage unit, described on page 640-2 as an IHKR1 system.
Finally, anyone know a price on this part?
Thanks in advance.
Rick
