I don't know if this applies but here's an exerpt from Bentley's pg. 250-4, (e32)

"A faulty gear position/start disable switch may cause transmission shifting problems and erratic transmission operation"

Again, I'm not sure if this applies to yours but it's a cheap & simple fix if it works, here's a link on how to remove the console to get to it.

2 days ago with no warning reverse has trouble engaging, also the lower gears don't engage well but over 30 mph there seems to be no problem. There have been no noises or anything else that would indicate anything was wrong with the car. Once it's cooled off it seems to do better.

My dealer is telling me the tranny is shot and that I'm looking at $3600 to replace it. This is a 94 525iT with 165,000 miles on it, I don't think I can justify dropping a new transmission in it. Please give me your opinion of which option you think is best.

1. $300 service at the dealer will buy me a few months. Then again it may have just been low on fluid or needed an adjustment and I will never have problems with it again. ( dealer insists I need a new transmission)

2. Used tranny (lifetime warranty) and install at private BMW mechanic. $1800

3. New tranny and install by dealer, 1 year warranty $3600.

Thanks in advanve for any help you guys can give.

Tim

Sorry, forgot one more thing, if I'm going to spend the money is it possible to convert it to a standard, higher performance transmission.
