Problem is, though, that they won't be willing to give your Mom much for her troubles. They can always sell it to someone else for full price and not even tell them about the damage.

It happened to my boss a few years ago. He took his Porsche 911 Cabrio in to be detailed. The detailer asked him who did the body work and paint work. My boss said, "What the hell are you talking about??" Turns out, the car had been seriously damaged during import. They painted it and passed it off as brand new. My boss was a very litigous sort of person and got a good chunk of money from Porsche.
