I would say it is a little cheaper than expected, but not a lot. The 1992 had the M20, a considerably weaker engine than the M50 that came in 1993. But, the motor is cheap and bulletproof so you should have no trouble with that. The auto tranny is probably a weak link, but if it shifts and the fluid is not burnt smelling you're OK. If it goes, the 5-sp conversion kit can be got really cheaply. On the motor, look for timing belt replacement (60k miles), change the coolant, check the hoses (7-10 years is really it for rubber), adjust valve lash (30 min job), change the air filter and fuel hoses and you should be more or less fine. I just picked up a 92 525 that to my non bmw eyes seemed to be to good of a deal.

car feels like it runs great no motor noise does not pull had it to 110 on the ride home & no shimmy
problems small dent under the right tail light
leather on driver seat very worn
166k (2nd owner bought it 2 years ago with 98 owner was in sales)
he chaged the ac compressor & some bushings in the front he cant remember what.
I paid 4k after looking at what other people are asking I am getting a bad feeling what should I look for. (it just passed nj inspection 2 weeks ago)
