Even if this guy spent only 4K on his car, saving about 2K on a private party sale, and decided to spend that 2K on a tranny swap, it would be a waste of time - he could just sell his car, net the 2K, and then go find a 5 speed without getting dirty.
Now if one was to put that time and money into a Touring, which was unavailable in this country with a manual transmission, you've got a whole different story. For a sedan? Not even worth thinking about (why then am I writing this? don't know, signing off)
Cheap is a relative term. Knowing Neil (he wrenches with us frequently) I bet that Neil, would:
1) do it himself saving considerable labor $$
2) find an ultra cheap source for parts.
An example of #2, we are working on rebuilding his M5 heads. A head gasket set for that engine is over $600! Neil found the oem set for a little over $100. Further, he now needs 12 intake valves (they got crunched when the M5 engine lost valve timing - not pretty). Intake valves are about $235 each. Neil found them for much, much less and even considered having having them custom made for less.
Neil and I both try to go the cheap way; but he knows cheap tricks I never knew of (although sometimes I can surprise him!)
