Sorry, by console, I was not referring to the center console, but the shifter carrier. This is the part that the ball of the shifter rides in. It is connected to the (IIRC) the front of the tranny with the BOAC and to the back of the tranny tunnel. The ball on the shifter fits into a ring of the shifter carrier/console. It is held in place with a nylon locking ring. The interference comes from the part of the shifter above/below the ball and the ring in the shifter carrier.

I think Bentleys has a good picture, or you could check the UUC short shifter site (sorry, don't recall their url.)

I have clearance in the console from the rubber boot and the foam. And reverse really isn't a bother either. I have clearance in reverse too
