I know this is going to sound crazy but I had the same type of problem with my 89 535i. After going through the front end I just happened to check the power steering fluid level. The level was low due to a leaking hose. I brought the fliud level back up to full and low and behold the front end knock went away???????? worth a look.
I tried the E32 board but no answers. since the cars are very similar, I figured I'd give you guys a try.
Does not happen all the time. When coming to a stop will hear a clunk/knock from the front end. Jacked the car up today and checked upper/lower arms and the tie rods. They all seemed fine. They where all replaced about 1 year ago. Also had the 750 bushings installed. I checked them by using channel locks to move them and didn't notice anything excessive.
I then took the car for a ride around the block and didn't notice any noise. Wife takes car to work and a few miles down the road she stops at lite and same noise again.
As soon as the brakes are applied and the weight is shifted to the front of the car is when the noise appears.
